Cystitis/urinary tract infection (women 16-64 years old only)

Please note that this service is for non-pregnant women aged 16-64 only. If you do not fall into this category, your pharmacist cannot help. Please contact your GP instead.

Cystitis in women is very common. The symptoms include:

Burning or stinging feeling when you urinate: Women sometimes describe this as feeling like they are ‘peeing broken glass’.
Cloudy urine.
Needing to get up at night to pass urine when you didn’t before.

Other symptoms include:

Needing to pass urine urgently: The urgent feeling to pass urine can be very severe but may not disappear after you have passed urine.
Tenderness or pain in your lower tummy, just above your pubic bone.
Blood in your urine.

Needing to pass urine frequently: You may only pass a small amount each time you do go.

Minor health conditions*

This form is for minor health conditions only. It should not be used by anyone who has:

Signs of a heart attack - pain like a very tight band, heavy weight or squeezing in the centre of your chest.
Signs of a stroke - face drooping on one side, can’t hold both arms up, difficulty speaking.
Severe drowsiness, confusion or unconsciousness (can't be woken up).
Severe difficulty breathing - gasping, not being able to get words out, choking or lips turning blue.
Sudden rapid swelling of the eyes, lips, mouth, throat or tongue.
Heavy bleeding - that won’t stop.
Severe injuries - or deep cuts after a serious accident.
Seizure (fit) - someone is shaking or jerking because of a fit, or is unconscious (can’t be woken up).

Cystitis form questions

Do you have symptoms of cystitis and are any of the following are true?*

You have had a fever of 37.9°C or higher within the last 48 hours
You also have pain or tenderness over your kidneys - in your back under your ribs on either side
You are under 16 or over 65 years old
You have suddenly become confused, or are much more confused than normal
You have had episodes of feeling shaky and/or freezing cold, or feeling (or being) sick in the last 48 hours
You have developed muscle aches and flu-like symptoms since you have had cystitis symptoms.
You currently have a urinary catheter, or catheterise yourself
You also have vaginal discharge or vaginal irritation
You are pregnant or breastfeeding

You have been told by your doctor to seek medical help straight away if you get an infection - because you are taking medication which may suppress your immune system
You have taken high dose steroid tablets (at least 40mg a day for a week or more or 20mg a day for 10 days or more) in the last month
You are having treatment for blood cancer (eg leukaemia, lymphoma) or HIV
You are allergic to nitrofurantoin
You have had 2 or more episodes of cystitis in the last 6 months
You have had 3 or more episodes of cystitis in the last year
You have taken a course of antibiotics for this episode of cystitis but your symptoms have not improved
You have had a course of antibiotics for another episode of cystitis in the last 3 months
You have diabetes or anaemia
